How to decarbonize states as investor and owners?

This is the DECARB project site. Welcome!

Did you know that states are still the largest owners and producers of fossil fuels? Well, they are. The more timely it is to develop strategies of how to rapidly, effectively, and fairly decarbonize states as owners and investors.

This is the objective of the DFF-funded DECARB project. We tackle the question of how to decarbonize states as investors and owners. To this end, the DECARB project combines qualitative and quantitative approaches into a mixed methods research design.

One major aim is to create an open-access, cross-temporal database of worldwide state carbon capital across different asset classes to understand the deep entanglements of states as carbon investors and owners.

This website will host this database – enabling academics, journalists, and the interested public to track and visualize the decarbonization potentials and pledges of their governments.
